Here at All About Party Bags, we’re used to writing blogs discussing party bags ideas such as pirate themes, or great party
ideas for Christmas. However, with all the recent reports and news
surrounding climate change and plastic pollution; it begs the question.
What can parents do to cut down the amount of single use plastic used
during a birthday party? Is a plastic free birthday party possible?
The Problems With Plastic
Plastic pollution and global warming is a major issue in our 21 st century society. Many would argue that climate change is the
most serious threat humanity faces as a species. In fact, earlier in 2019
when speaking at MLK Now in New York City,
US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
said “the world will end in 12 years if we don't address climate change”.
Then later in the year Greta Thunberg said
at the United Nations, "The eyes of all future generations are upon you.
And if you choose to fail us, I say - we will never forgive you."
Plastic pollution and global warming are significant issues that our
society faces, and as such, people are constantly taking steps to go
plastic free. So what can you and your family do to ‘do your bit’ for the
planet and make your children’s birthday parties use as little plastic as
Taking Steps To A Plastic Free Birthday Party
Plastic is so integrated into our daily lives it may at first seem like an
impossible task to separate ourselves from plastic; however there are many
fantastic alternatives available.
Disposable Plastic Cutlery
Commonly seen at parties, disposable plastic cutlery sets are a great
opportunity to reduce the amount of plastic at the party. At first it
may seem difficult, after all the convenience of disposable plastic
cutlery is very advantageous, as often people don’t have enough
reusable cutlery sets to cater for all of the party guests. However,
just because you’re aiming for plastic free doesn’t mean that you can’t
take advantage of disposable cutlery products. For example, you could
swap the plastic cutlery for recyclable wooden alternatives.
Throwaway Party Cups
When we think of throwaway party cups, the red cups often seen in films
and television shows come to mind. These cups, whilst fantastically
lightweight and incredibly convenient are a prime example of where you
can ditch single-use plastic. Instead of opting for the throw away
cups, you could instead choose more resilient alternatives, such as a
reusable plastic cup, or better still avoid plastic all together with a
drinking container made from a plant-based material such as drinking
cups made from bamboo.
However, if you would like the convenience of a disposal item, you
could choose a bio-plastic that is compostable. Various different forms
of PLA cups can be used for cold beverages and as they are made from
plant based resin, they’re entirely compostable and as such recyclable.
This means that whilst the material is still technically a plastic,
it’s still a great alternative to single use plastic cups which cannot

Plastic is commonly used for different styles of party bags. Whether

plastic such as LLDPE or HDPE. However, you can take a step away from
plastic and choose party bags made from a different material.
